Is Jump Height Limited by Genetics?

Genetics set a ceiling — but training explains 60–80% of jump-performance variance. Here is what is actually locked in and what is not.

Genetics do set a ceiling on jump height — but 99% of people are nowhere near it. Understanding which factors are fixed and which respond to training changes how you train.

What genetics actually set

Muscle fiber type, Achilles length and stiffness, limb length ratios and the ACTN3 genotype all influence power potential. None of them are trainable in the way strength is.

What training can still do

A higher fast-twitch ratio means more power potential, but training converts IIx fibers toward IIa and dramatically improves coordination. Even genetically 'unfavorable' fiber profiles improve significantly with structured training.

The variance numbers

In the research, training explains 60–80% of jump-performance variance; genetics explain 20–40%. The practical takeaway: your training history is the bigger number, so stop using genetics as an excuse and train the controllable 60–80%.
